What to see and do in Paimpont: the legendary sites of Brocéliande

From the Aleth campsite, the Brocéliande forest reveals its paths, ponds and legends. In just a few minutes, you’ll reach Paimpont, the tourist capital of Brocéliande and the ideal starting point for exploring the forest’s emblematic sites.

The forest of Brocéliande

Explore the mythical trails of Brocéliande, the land of Arthurian legends. The largest forest in Brittany, covering 7,000 hectares, the forest offers numerous hiking and cycling trails accessible to all. Between clearings and Breton moors, the scenery changes with the seasons, ideal for family walks or picnics in the heart of nature.

The seat of Merlin and the Barenton fountain

Two must-see sites: Merlin’s Seat, a rocky promontory offering a unique panorama of the forest, and Barenton Fountain, famous for its “quivering” waters and ancient tales. Tradition has it that pouring water from the fountain onto Perron de Merlin, a nearby stone slab, will trigger a storm. These places, accessible on foot or by car, are among the most symbolic stages in the Brocéliande legend.

The Fairy Mirror and the Giant’s Tomb

Le Miroir aux Fées is a tranquil, unspoilt setting, perfect for a stroll or a moment’s rest by the water. According to Celtic tradition, this pond marked the threshold to the Other World, where fairies came to mirror themselves. A little further on, the Giant’s Tomb, a Neolithic megalithic alignment surrounded by forest, bears witness to the area’s rich history. Legend has it that a giant defeated by the Knights of the Round Table rests here for eternity.

The Forges and Abbey of Paimpont

Don’t miss the Forges de Paimpont site, a former industrial mecca now converted into a cultural space and living museum. In operation from the 17th century to 1884, they employed several hundred workers and produced cannons, rails and nails. In the heart of the village, theAbbey of Notre-Dame de Paimpont overlooks the pond of the same name. Its architecture and peacefulness make it an essential stop-off point for understanding the history of the area.

The Door of Secrets

Before setting off to explore the forest, take a detour to the Porte des Secrets, a scenographic tour of the Abbey’s former outbuildings. This immersive journey through six animated rooms plunges you into the legendary world of Brocéliande, between Arthurian tales and the history of iron. Guided by the voice of a forest ranger, this poetic introduction sharpens your eyes before exploring the trails.

Paimpont pond

Classified as a departmental nature reserve, theEtang de Paimpont stretches over almost 50 hectares at the foot of the Abbey, reflecting its majestic silhouette. A 2- to 4-kilometre hiking trail leads around the pond, allowing you to admire the high forest from its banks. For the more active, a nautical base offers kayak, paddles and pedal-boat rentals, providing another way to discover this body of water, home to numerous plant and animal species.
